Facebook & Google dominate the list of 2016's top apps

Facebook (FB) again held the first-place position in smartphone apps in 2016, while Alphabet (GOOGL) properties held five of the top 10 positions, Amazon (AMZN) showed the strongest growth and Apple (AAPL) held onto the No. 9 slot. The photo-sharing app's user number grew by more than one-third from 2015.

Showing its mobile dominance, Facebook's Messenger app took second place, with over 129 million average unique users each month. Internationally, Facebook has an average of 1.8 billion monthly users and is the largest social network in the world. In fact, Instagram demonstrated the biggest growth of 36 percent over the previous year. The social networking app had more than 146 million average unique users each month, a growth of 14 percent from previous year.

Facebook & Google dominate the list of top best applications of 2016. The company has been adding features to its app over the previous year, like games, its own marketplace and its many, many attempts to be Snapchat. In third-quarter, a majority of subscribers used Android (53 percent) and iOS (45 percent) devices to access their apps. Nielsen also peeked into the status of smart phones in the United States discovering that 88% of the mobile subscribers are now using smartphones, another enhancement from 86% in the starting of the year.

Nielsen's Electronic Mobile Measurement system is responsible for these findings. The panelists are recruited online in English and include Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American, Native American and Alaskan Native and other mixed racial background consumer representation.
