Man killed by officer in driveway didn't have gun

A man, 73, who family said suffered from dementia, was shot and killed by police in a driveway near his Bakersfield, Calif., home. When a witness pointed out Serna, officials say an officer believed he had a gun.

The 73-year-old man was identified by his son as Francisco Serna.

"As some point during that contact, an officer fired several rounds striking the individual", Carruesco said. They have not yet provided details of any confrontation between Serna and officers who were responding to a report of a man with a handgun in a driveway.

He added that his father - who moved with his wife from Wasco, California, eight years prior to be closer to their children - started showing the early signs of dementia in 2015, The Times reported.

Serna's family said that he often went on walks to overcome to make himself exhausted before going to bed.

She said her father did not own a gun.

"He should have been surrounded by family at old age, not surrounded by bullets", Serna said.

It was Jones' daughter who called 911 after Jones said Serna approached her and a friend as they sat in a vehicle. Roy Serna said his father was in the "early stages" of dementia and that he took walks when he had difficulties going to sleep. It's not known how many shots were fired.

Francisco's son, Rogelio Serna, said that before his father had retired around 12 years ago, he had worked in California's Central Valley at a cotton gin.

The Bakersfield Police Department confirmed Monday that no gun had been found. Serna's family told a local news outlet that he "walks around with a cross".

The research published Tuesday in online journal Social Science & Medicine - Population Health earlier this month, showed that minorities who live in states with tough anti-immigrant policies report higher rates of discrimination.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave as the investigation continues.
