Broncos hire Vance Joseph as new head coach

Antonio JonesJan 12, 2017

The Denver Broncos hired Vance Joseph to replace former coach Gary Kubiak, who retired earlier this month because of health concerns.

Sporting News also reported last week that the Broncos' head coaching job was Joseph's to lose heading into his interview.

The two sides are now working on the financial terms of the deal for the 44-year-old defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins, the source said. Notably, he worked for the 49ers from 2005 to 2010, and he was able to develop some great, young defensive backs.

The 44-year-old caught the Broncos' eye when he interviewed for their head coaching vacancy back in 2015.

Kubiak cited health concerns for his abrupt parting on January 2, Miami was knocked out of the playoffs by the Pittsburgh on January 8, and the Broncos closed the deal with Joseph just three days later. He is also scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, but those plans are on hold. McCoy has the inside track on the Denver job, but even if Musgrave loses out to him, there will likely be other OC jobs open for him.

Joseph's hiring has raised some questions about who he will retain on his staff.

This season was his first as a coordinator. And the Broncos' director of pro personnel, Matt Russell, was Joseph's college teammate at Colorado. So now that Joseph won't be interviewed by the team, the first round of head coaching candidates is complete at six. Indianapolis Colts (1996, 4 games). Former Broncos offensive coordinator and current Dolphins Coach Adam Gase gave a ringing endorsement of Joseph's abilities. The Broncos struggled on offense during a 9-7 season, and the defending champions missed the postseason. He was a quarterback and running back for the Buffaloes from 1990 through 1995.

The Dolphins finished 29th in the National Football League in yards allowed (382.6 per game), 18th in points allowed (23.8 per game), and 30th in rushing yards allowed (140.4 per game).

Joseph has plenty of experience on both sides of the ball when it comes to coaching, and the Broncos need a coach who can balance it out on offense and defense.
