An American consular official was shot in Guadalajara, Mexico's second largest city in the restive western state of Jalisco, but is now in stable condition, Mexican authorities said on Saturday.

Mexican authorities are searching for the perpetrator responsible for shooting a USA consulate official in the city of Guadalajara Friday.

The FBI is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the identification of the suspect, according to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.

Guadalajara is Mexico's second largest city and is not specifically singled out for any special precautions in the latest U.S.travel warning updated on December 8.

The State Department has not named the person who was shot, but the Mexico Attorney General's office identified him as Christopher Ashcraft.

The statement said Mexican authorities are in contact with the U.S. embassy and consulate in efforts to locate the shooter. A consulate spokesperson spoke to The Guardian and said that they are working with Mexican law enforcement in this matter. The US consulate has not commented or given any information on the victim's identity.
