Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and elected to bat in the first Twenty20 worldwide against New Zealand at Napier on Tuesday.

Williamson hit 73 not out, and was supported well by Colin de Grandhomme - who smashed an unbeaten 41 off 22 balls - as the Black Caps chased down their 142-run target with two overs to spare.

New Zealand included three new caps in its lineup for Tuesday's first global at McLean Park and all three delivered as New Zealand extended the dominance over Bangladesh it established in a sweep of their recent three-match one-day series.

New Zealand looked under pressure at times, especially at 61-4 after 10 overs when Williamson ran out Tom Bruce (7) on debut and when the home team's innings had begun to lose momentum.

Earlier, Bangladesh opener Imrul Kayes was caught by wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi off Matt Henry in the second over of the innings for a duck.

Broom was undone by a brilliant piece of fielding by veteran Shakib Al Hasan who caught a hook shot on the boundary before lobbing it up, taking a step out of play and diving back into take the ball.

Ferguson just missed out on a hat-trick in his first over of global T20 cricket after having both Sabbir Rahman and Soumya Sarkar caught on the offside in consecutive deliveries. His partner Tamim Iqbal couldn't go far and departed in the 5th over scoring only 11. Mossadek Hossain put his hand up as he and Mahmudullah added 30 more runs, to drag Bangladesh's total close to 100.

Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah then orchestrated a mini-recovery in a 37-run stand before Shakib top-edged a short delivery from Colin de Grandhomme to Mitchell Santner at midwicket.

After scores of zero, one and three in the last three ODIs against the Black Caps, Mahmudullah rediscovered form with a crucial 47-ball 52 which included three fours and three sixes.

Ferguson finished with figures of 3 for 32 but the rearguard action had given Bangladesh something to bowl at.
