Twenty people were left stranded 65 feet off the ground after a rollercoaster broke down at a theme park on Australia's Gold Coast.

Twenty people were trapped for nearly two hours on a rollercoaster ride at a theme park on Australia's Gold Coast yesterday, said emergency services.

Movie World, Australia's leading entertainment based tourist attraction, is part of Village Roadshow Limited (VRL), Australia's largest theme park operator.

The incident follows the deaths of four people on the neighbouring Thunder River Rapids Ride at Dreamworld in October, which prompted a sweeping Queensland government safety audit of local theme park rides.

The ambulance service is on standby but says so far there are no reports of injuries.

"They all looked a little bit flushed, a little bit hot as you would imagine, being in the sun", he said.

Movie World general manager Greg Yong said a "mechanical issue with the chain" had caused the rollercoaster to stop. "Due to the time required to reset the mechanical issue, we have engaged the Queensland fire brigade to assist with the evacuation process", it said.

Movie World is one of several theme parks on the Gold Coast.

Dreamworld owner Ardent Leisure has announced that the ride would be demolished and a permanent memorial to the victims erected.
