Why Michael Keaton says he turned down 'Batman Forever': The script 'sucked'

Willard RiveraJan 06, 2017

There are plenty of rumors about why Michael Keaton refused to star in Batman Forever, even though he had already enjoyed a successful two-film run as the billionaire superhero.

Ironically Birdman so Keaton mirror his own life, playing an actor who had a big career as a superhero in the 1990s, and now wants to make some real art. "I didn't understand why (Schumacher) wanted to do what he wanted to do".

During a candid interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the 65-year-old explained: "The script [was never] good", when asked why he felt like that was the right time to step down as the DC Comics character. However, Keaton declined. "The script never was great", he said.

Batman Forever's Caped Crusader was played by Val Kilmer; he was replaced by George Clooney in 1997's Batman and Robin.

Keaton said he attended "many meetings" over the film, and was "polite up to a point about things". Burton's films are still reverred today and it was thanks to the brighter tone of the next two ('Forever" and "Batman & Robin') that the world got Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.

Given that the Schumacher "Batman" films also introduced the infamous nippled Batsuit, Keaton's instincts seem to have served him well. "Batman Forever" was under the direction of Joel Schumacher.

In 1995 Keaton famously dropped out of a third outing, Batman Forever, and has now revealed why. Many have speculated as to why, and Keaton's briefly discussed the decision in the past.

The Oscar victor made his debut in last year's (16) Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and he'll also appear as Batman in this year's (17) Justice League.
