Explosive Device Thrown into Crowded Old Town Pasadena Restaurant

Authorities then searched the restaurant and located a "detonated homemade pyrotechnic device", the Police Department stated. The motive is not known, police said. He described the explosive as a "homemade pyrotechnic device".

"This evening an incendiary device exploded within our Pasadena restaurant", The Cheescake Factory said in a statement.

Witnesses say restaurant workers and guests were able to evacuate the diner in due time following the incident.

Still, the homemade explosive involved "heavy smoke" after detonation, and a man was seen running away after he threw the device, according to local news station KABC.


Garrett Gunkle, who was sitting with his wife at the bar, told KNBC-TV there was chaos as customers ran for the exits in the Los Angeles suburb.

"People were jumping over one another, fighting to get over bar stools, people were tripping, falling. stuff going everywhere". The suspect was described as a Hispanic or Middle Eastern man with a heavy beard.

Local authorities notified federal agencies out of an abundance of caution, but don't know if the incident was meant to be an act of terrorism, the Star-News said. The Cheesecake Factory confirmed the incident in a statement and said the Pasadena location would reopen Friday. Police is still looking for the man who threw it.
