Ishant, Stokes, Morgan valued at big bucks for IPL auction

As the countdown for the 10th Player Auction of the Indian Premier League starts, the eight franchises have swung into action to fill the vacant slots. Although the list of 351 players has been announced, the complete list of players is yet to be announced. Along with them, 23 capped Indian players will also enter the auction with fast bowler Sudeep Tyagi being the only Indian global removed from the original list.

These include Twenty20 specialists like Irfan Pathan and Varun Aaron, who have set their base price at Rs. 50 lakh each. The players with the maximum base price of Rs 2 crore are hence Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews, Pat Cummins and Ishant Sharma.

Pathan stressed that his low base price is aimed exclusively at earning an opportunity to play.

Tiwary admitted: "After missing out on the last season, it's important for me to be part of the IPL", he said.

The auction before the tenth edition of the IPL will be held on 20 February in Bangalore. Although franchise officials had earlier indicated that this season's auction could be a short event, with teams trying to plug a few gaps, the likely early departure of South Africa and England players could impact the teams' auction strategies.

Mathews featured in Kolkata Knight riders, now-disbanded Pune Warriors India and Delhi Daredevils in the history of IPL.

In the nine IPL finals that have been played so far, only a handful have seen an Indian rise up to the occasion and contribute to a team's win in the final. While Negi had been snapped up by Delhi Daredevils for Rs. 8.5 crore a year ago, Ashwin had been bought by Rising Pune Supergiants for Rs 4.5 crore.

Sensing that they have been released primarily for the sake of price correction, both players seem to have opted for a very low base price.

Kings XI Punjab have the maximum funds for auction with a purse of Rs 23.35 crore.
