North Korean Leader's Half Brother Dead In Suspected Assassination

Alicia WestFeb 15, 2017

He has now reportedly been murdered by "two female agents" who poisoned him in Kuala Lumpur.

"Should the Kim Jong Un regime collapse it is Kim Jong Nam who could replace Kim Jong Un". Kim Jong Nam may have become more vulnerable as his defender in the North Korean hierarchy, Kim Kyong Hui - Kim Jong Un's aunt and the husband of his assassinated uncle, Jang Song Thaek - appears to have fallen from favor or died.

So who exactly was he - and why was he hiding out in Malaysia before his reported assassination?

He and his younger brother, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, are both sons of former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

"Given the recent defections", he said, "Kim Jong Un felt the need to show that the regime could get to anyone who may be contemplating opposing the regime". North Korea has not commented on the issue so far. Although there was scant evidence that Kim Jong Nam was plotting against the North Korean leader, he provided an alternative for North Koreans who would want to depose his brother. When he was around 27 years old, he began working at the Ministry of Public Security. According to Gomi, he claimed his father outrightly refused to discuss the succession of power for many years because it indicated his own death. But at the same time, Madden noted that Kim Jong Nam had publicly said he would do anything to help the new leader.

Airport authorities rushed him to hospital and he died on the way, the police chief said. Recall, as an instructive example, the breathless and false reports that Kim Jong-un's uncle had been mauled to death by dogs.

But according to Japanese magazine Shūkan Shinchō, he made several under the radar clandestine visits to Japan prior to the saga.

Speculation and rumors surrounding Kim Jong-nam's killing are rapidly swelling, despite any concrete evidence as to why Jong-nam was killed now. This was around the same time as the death of his father.

Jong-Nam´s half-brother Jong-Un took over as North Korean leader when their father died in December 2011. Presumably, his assailants were North Korean agents. Kim Jong Un's aunt told The Washington Post last year that the current leader had been chosen as successor in the early 1990s when he was only 8 years old.

After his fall from favour, it is thought Kim lived a relatively low profile in Macau, where he is said to have enjoyed the slot machines, although other reports suggested he might be living in Singapore.

Jong-Un has been trying to strengthen his grip on power in the face of growing worldwide pressure over his country's nuclear and missile programmes. "Those three reasons are why he thinks he'll fail". Up until about 2012, Kim Jong Nam was said to be, a Chinese administrative region the Week once compared to Las Vegas.

With Kim Jong Nam out of the picture, you might assume that Kim Jong Chul, the middle son, would be the natural choice for a new heir.
