Packers pull the plug on Starks

Antonio JonesFeb 09, 2017

Prior to anything they apparently have done with Shields, the Packers made their first significant move of the offseason on Tuesday with the release of veteran running back James Starks.

The seven-year pro had one year remaining on his contract, signed in 2014.

Starks did not play in the team's final three regular season games or their three playoff contests this season after suffering a concussion in a mid-December vehicle accident. At the end of the season, he still had not been cleared to return to action.

Starks has spent his entire seven-year career with the Packers, but only played in nine games last year due to injury, including a concussion sustained in a vehicle accident in December.

"I'm thinking it's not over". I don't know. I just love the game, man, and I feel that I can get back out there and play.

We'll start with the very latest, which is that cornerback Sam Shields seemed to indicate early this morning that he has been released by the Packers. But like I said, I'm going through this, what I've got to go through.

The Packers picked up $12 million in salary-cap space in the last two days.

Shields told reporters after the Packers' 44-21 loss in the NFC Championship Game against the Atlanta Falcons that he still wanted to pursue his career despite concussion symptoms lingering more than four months later. "That's the primary focus". He scored nine career touchdowns for the Packers and rushed for over 2,500 yards.

He was released with a non-football injury designation, but according to Ian Rapoport, he will be healthy going forward.
