Third New England Patriots Player Declines White House Trip

Antonio JonesFeb 09, 2017

A second member of the Super Bowl-winning New England Patriots has decided he will skip the traditional White House visit Super Bowl champions - and champions of every major American professional sports league - make.

Outspoken tight end Martellus Bennett was the first Patriot to pass on going to visit with Donald Trump. "I can't imagine a way I go there". Hightower had a huge strip-sack in the second half that helped the Patriots mount a comeback. "Just follow me on Twitter", the New York Times reports.

The last time the Patriots were at the White House, Brady backed out of a team visit with President Barack Obama due to "family commitments". "I am not going to go", Bennett said.

"I haven't thought about it since I came but I'm not going to go", replied a uniformed Bennett, holding his daughter Jett in his arms. McCourty told Time magazine he was skipping the occasion because "I don't feel accepted in the White House".

And I can not in good conscience, although we won this as a team ― and I would love to share in this moment as a team ― I can not in good conscience go.

"I'd like to think. I want to be on the side of history that's positive, that's bringing people together".

"Been there, done that", Hightower said during an interview with ESPN.

One of his tweets, posted on January 30 of this year, read "America was built on inclusiveness not exclusiveness", in opposition to President Trump's travel ban on seven predominantly Muslim countries.

The Patriots have been linked to Trump because of the President's friendship with quarterback Tom Brady and his relationship with Patriots owner Robert Kraft and coach Bill Belichick, both of whom he's praised publicly.
