4 more likely homegrown Zika cases found in Texas

Pregnant women should avoid traveling to Mexico, where several communities have reported cases of the Zika virus, the state press release said.

While symptoms are usually minor, Zika can also cause severe birth defects, including microcephaly, and other poor birth outcomes in some women infected during pregnancy. The Health Department confirmed the five total cases Wednesday as part of a health alert to city doctors.

As of Friday, about 8,000 New Yorkers have been tested for Zika and 962 have tested positive, including 325 pregnant women, according to the health department.

There have been 244 cases of locally contracted Zika in Florida since the first case was discovered in the summer.

Two other babies also have been born in NY with Zika-related birth defects, the State Health Department said Wednesday.

Symptoms include "fever, joint aches, rash, red eyes", said NetHealth CEO, George Roberts UT Health Northeast Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs.

Using EPA-approved insect repellent. Spray exposed skin and clothing with repellent.

Wearing long trousers and long-sleeved shirts that cover exposed skin. Drain standing water in your backyard and neighborhood.

Using air conditioning or window and door screens that are in good fix to keep mosquitoes out of homes. Stay indoors to prevent mosquito bites.

Yet the condition isn't the only birth anomaly related to the Zika virus, which can be transmitted by mosquitoes or passed sexually.

An analysis of USA residents traveling to Zika-affected countries who were seen at Global TravEpiNet sites reveals that almost 75% were men and women of reproductive age, and two thirds of the women traveling to the areas were of reproductive age, only a third of whom reported using prescription birth control.

She said public health officials in the city "are closely following all babies born to mothers who test positive for Zika infection and will connect parents to available services to improve their child's quality of life". The percentage of those traveling to visit family and relatives, at 1% of reproductive age women, was smaller than expected, suggesting a need for more efforts to reach that group with pretravel health services.
