Badgers sink Broncos 24-16 in Cotton Bowl

The Badgers had their eyes on the Rose Bowl before falling apart in the second half against the Nittany Lions.

Facing a fourth-and-4 at the 11-yard-line, Terrell lobbed a pass high into the endzone, where Davis fought off a defender to make a touchdown catch and give the Broncos a fighting chance.

After a year that began with low expectations from outsiders, an upset win in Titletown, and close games seemingly every week, the Wisconsin Badgers capped the season off with a bowl win.

Details for Monday's game are below.

Western Michigan rowed the boat all the way to the Cotton Bowl, but once they arrived, their boat hit some solid rocks.

Western Michigan (13-1) fell one game shy of completing an improbable ideal season. Houston went 5 of 6 for 78 yards in the first half, leading the Badgers to scoring drives of 11, 7 and 9 plays, and finished 11 of 12 for 159 yards.

The Broncos had their opportunities to remain undefeated, and outside of the first quarter appeared more than capable of going toe to toe with one of the Big Ten's best teams.

Wisconsin backup quarterback Alex Hornibrook hooked up with Troy Fumagalli in the back of the end zone from 8 yards to push the Badgers' advantage back to two touchdowns.

Arlington, Texas - It looked unlikely early, but Western Michigan hung with the big, bad boys of Wisconsin.

Key Play: After the first play of the drive went for three yards, Wisconsin executed three straight plays of at least 20, including a 23-yard catch-and-run by Clement down to the Western Michigan 18.

Fumagalli would be named the Cotton Bowl Offensive Player of the Game, while Edwards was selected as the Defensive Player of the Game with 10 tackles. Unfortunately it proved to be not quite enough as Wisconsin downed the Broncos 24-16 and ended their bid at a flawless 14-0 season. Corey Clement rushed in for a 2-yard touchdown, and not a finger was laid on him as he breezed into the end zone.

Fumagalli finished with six catches for 83 yards a touchdown. That's when Terrell made a mistake and forced one into coverage. With that field position, WMU bled 8:45 of game clock on a 16 play, 65 yard drive ending in a spectacular touchdown from Zach Terrell on a bootleg.

That was the 51st touchdown connection between Terrell and Davis, tying an NCAA record for a tandem.

NOTES: Chryst became the third Wisconsin coach to win at least 11 games in a season, joining Barry Alvarez and Bret Bielema.

Special teams: B+. There wasn't much from the unit on this day, however Andrew Endicott drilled his lone field goal (30 yards), and Anthony Lotti booted three punts for 125 yards, including one inside the 20.
