Honda Recalls 772000 More Vehicles Over Faulty Takata Airbags

Kari ReynoldsJan 14, 2017

Honda Motor Co. recalled another 772,000 Honda and Acura vehicles in the USA due to defective front passenger seat airbag inflators.

The automaker, however, stressed that some cars that underwent airbag replacement during the previous recall could now require replacements. The latest recall includes model year 2005-2006 Acura MDX, 2005-2012 Acura RL, 2008-2012 Honda Accord, 2006-2011 Honda Civic, 2007-2012 Honda Fit, and 2010-2012 Honda Insight.

No recalls related to the one in the USA are being announced in other regions yet, Honda announced Wednesday. While the Takata recall came to light in 2013, estimates show that the problem could have started as early as 2001.

All have front passenger air bag inflators made by Takata that can explode with too much force and spew metal shrapnel.

The recall also covers the 2009-2012 Acura TSX, 2011-2012 Acura TSX Wagon, 2010-2012 Acura ZDX, 2010-2012 Honda Crosstour, 2005-2011 Honda CR-V, 2005-2011 Honda Element, 2012 Honda FCX Clarity, 2005-2012 Honda Pilot and 2006-2012 Honda Ridgeline.

Those affected will be contacted by Honda through mail.

Honda is encouraging people to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer for fix as soon as possibe. The company is the largest customer of the auto parts maker, and has recalled more than 10.7 million Honda and Acura vehicles.

The deadly Takata airbag defect stemmed from the way the company used a chemical to inflate its airbag in the event of a crash.

The airbags have been linked to 11 deaths worldwide and 100 injuries around the world.

Takata has reportedly agreed to a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department to the tune of $1 billion.
