Samsung won't unveil Galaxy S8 smartphone at MWC show

Samsung Electronics has finally revealed what caused all those Galaxy Note 7 smartphones to catch on fire previous year, prompting flight bans and a multi-billion dollar recall.

"For the last several months, together with independent industry expert organizations, we conducted (a) thorough investigation", Koh Dong-jin, Samsung's smartphone division chief told reporters.

Samsung SDI - Batteries from this supplier didn't have enough room between a heat-sealed protective pouch located around the battery and the phone's internals.

Samsung is planning to launch an all-screen, bezel-free version of its flagship Galaxy phone in the form of the Galaxy S8.

Unsurprisingly, Samsung looks set to continue using its own Exynos CPUs in its smartphones, and reports indicate that the Galaxy S8's processor will be the Exynos 8895 - octa-core chips built with the company's 10nm FinFET architecture.

While praising Samsung's frankness and apologies, analysts question whether the world's largest smartphone maker has really gotten to the bottom of the problem in blaming flaws in the design and production of batteries. Now, after months of speculation, Samsung has finally announced what caused the phones to explode. Samsung will feature the USB Type-C headphone port, which is complicated for the Android ecosystem with incompatible devices like headphones only working for one type of device.

The Galaxy S8 phone won't launch at the end of February; it's been pushed back while Samsung HQ dealt with the Note 7 recall disaster and investigation.

Since the Samsung Galaxy S8 is a flagship device, it is only logical that it will be run with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor.

But Koh also confirmed that the new Galaxy S8 will not be unveiled at MWC this year.

Samsung released heavily technical explanations for the flaws. However, its much better-than-expected preliminary fourth-quarter profits appeared to show that, financially at least, the company had shaken off the recall.

While the Galaxy S8 is said to be a 5.7-inch device, the Galaxy S8 Plus is said to be a 6-inch one. The phone was created to be super slim, which caused stress on the upper-right corner of the battery. Considering that Samsung already opted not to make that jump when developing the Note 7, we'd be surprised to see the company do it now.

The company had to recall its devices en masse and even offer all sorts of reparations, such as discounts upon its future devices, vouchers and cashbacks upon turning in the Note 7 and purchasing another Samsung device, to ensure that the situation deteriorate even further.

The company has recalled 3.06 million Note 7 phones. About 4 per cent, or 120,000 units, of the recalled Galaxy Note 7s have not been returned.
