3 tornadoes touch down near New Orleans causing severe damage, injuries

Three tornadoes out of the six had hit the New Orleans metropolitan area, thereby destructing homes, knocking down trees and cutting down power lines. The National Weather Service will have to verify that the damage, did in fact, come from tornadoes.

In addition to New Orleans, which also declared a state of emergency, tornadoes were reported in Baton Rouge, Donaldsonville, Ponchatoula and Killian, according to ABC News meteorologist Melissa Griffin.

Janes said she knows of two injuries in the parish, both minor.

National Weather Service teams are out getting information about at least four tornadoes that hit Louisiana and one that hit MS on Tuesday.

Locations impacted include New Orleans, East New Orleans, Metairie, Chalmette, Avondale, Jefferson, Harahan, Westwego, Elmwood, River Ridge, Waggaman, Bridge City, Arabi, New Orleans Armstrong Airport and Lakefront Airport.

NASA's Michoud Facility, an 832-acre site in New Orleans, was also reportedly damaged as a storm passed through. Mayor Mitch Landrieu estimated that 250 homes were badly damaged.

People and emergency crews began picking up and assessing damage Wednesday.

The national Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, said 2.7 million people in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama would be at the highest risk of severe weather on Tuesday.
