"Karina helped us to identify this suspect, thanks the DNA we recovered from under her nails", officials said.

Local news stations reported authorities used DNA tests to identify Lewis, matching DNA from the crime scene and Verdano.

Vetrano, 30, had gone missing from her Howard Beach home after going for a jog.

Ms Vetrano's body was found by her father, Philip, some five hours after she left the house about 5:45pm for her evening run.

The newspaper reported that police recovered the DNA from Vetrano's body, but the DNA did not match anyone in a national DNA database or a NY database of convicted criminals.

An autopsy found that she had been raped and strangled.

Police arrested a 20-year-old man in the August murder of Howard Beach jogger Karina Vetrano, authorities announced Sunday.

According to the New York Post, Lewis had been on police officers' radars for some time after he was seen acting suspiciously in the Howard Beach area. Lewis has no prior arrest record, police said.

Now investigators have been able to hold him after they approached him for a DNA sample which he gave voluntarily, cops said.

He says DNA evidence led to the arrest, with genetic material found beneath Vetrano's fingernails, on her phone and on her neck that resulted in a DNA profile.

For months following her death, Vetrano's parents Phil and Cathy Vetrano pleaded for tips and offered rising amounts of reward money for any information leading to an arrest.

'My baby girl Karina went into these weeds right here and never came out, ' Phil said during a news conference Thursday. "I want to see if I know him".

Lewis, unemployed, is expected to be arraigned on charges of murder and sexual assault. In a video from AM New York, Lewis looked around while he was led to a cop auto, appearing stunned and confused, as people could be heard yelling "why'd you kill her?"
