Top 3 questions about Mesa woman's deportation

The Obama administration had prioritized expulsion of undocumented immigrants who threatened public safety or national security, had ties to criminal gang activity, committed serious felony offenses or were habitual misdemeanor criminal offenders.

The mother of two was convicted of "felony identity theft in 2009 for working at the Golfland Sunsplash amusement park in Mesa", according to 12 News.

Her attorney, Ray Ybarra Maldonado, said there aren't many legal avenues for her to come back to the U.S. "Getting back to the U.S., legally, there's really no route for her".

"She's been coming and checking in every year, no problem", her husband told MSNBC, asking his name not be used.

The Mexican government warned Friday of a "new reality" for its citizens living in the United States and advised them to "take precautions" following the deportation of an undocumented mother after a routine visit with us immigration authorities.

Mexican nationals in the US now face a "new reality", authorities warned in a statement. Lynn Tramonte, the Deputy Director of America's Voice Education Fund, said on a conference call Friday that she'd met with immigrant mothers and all asked for guidance on how to keep their children safe in case they are deported.

An immigrant mother who was granted leniency under the Obama administration has been deported to Mexico in a sign of how President Donald Trump will carry through on his campaign promises on immigration.

Garcia de Rayos was deported about 10 a.m. from a Nogales border crossing and ICE worked with Mexican consular officials to repatriate her, agency spokeswoman Yasmeen Pitts O'Keefe said in a prepared statement. She appealed and a court allowed her to stay in the United States as long as she checked in once a year with immigration authorities.

"Lawyers from two of the nation's leading civil rights' groups said Ms. Rayos might be the first undocumented immigrant to be arrested during a scheduled meeting with immigration officials since Mr. Trump took office".

That all changed on Wednesday, though, as Trump's executive order has returned "a great deal of discretion to ICE officers in the field to enforce immigration laws as they were written", the Center for Immigration Studies' Jessica Vaughan notes.

Any undocumented immigrant convicted or simply charged with a crime who hasn't been adjudicated could be deported under a new Trump administration executive order announced January 25.

After a whirlwind 48 hours during which she was detained, deported and taken to a migrant shelter in Mexico, Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos was temporarily reunited with her children.

Following her detention and deportation order, protests erupted in Phoenix and demanded her release. "She is only 14 years old and she is still growing", said Angel Rayos Garcia, 16.

Activists staged protests and attempted to block a van carrying Garcia de Rayos away from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building.

Garcia de Rayos, flanked by her children, spoke to reporters in Nogales late Thursday. Yet one way Trump could get around this reality is by expanding the definition of a criminal offense, which is exactly what he did in his executive order.
